Fish swim, birds fly and dogs walk
Wolves may travel up to 30 miles each day in search of food. As descendants from wolves, dogs are ‘pre-programmed’ to walk. All dogs need exercise to lead balanced and healthy lives. Just because a dog is small doesn’t mean he needs less exercise, and although breed can give some indication of the dog’s energy level, the final judgement must be made on the individual dogs needs.
As your dog’s pack leader, you must help him or her expend energy in a productive way. For all dogs, this means a daily walk. Some dogs may require additional activities such as running, balls or swimming, in addition to, but never replacing the walk.
Remember that dogs are animals, and animals need to travel and discover the world. A back garden is no substitute for a good walk.
Dogs that are not sufficiently exercised and mentally stimulated can become frustrated. This can lead to unwanted behaviours like, excessive barking and digging. If you have a dog that exhibits these behaviours, please consider if you are exercising your dog sufficiently, and get out walking!
